Day 6 – What I Learned Today

Worked with my Cricut Explore* today.  First thing that I can tell you is this,

I do not like glitter!

I cut out the gold glitter paper letters for Catherine’s Birthday Bunting.  There is glitter everywhere.  I made sure to clean my Cricut to remove all the loose glitter before I closed it up for the night.

So besides confirming the fact that I do not like glitter – I did learn a couple of things today about my Cricut.

My regular grip mat at had lost some of  its “stick” so I thought I should break out the strong grip mat especially since this gold glitter paper was so thick.  Now, you know that I didn’t check to see what you were really suppose to use the strong grip mat for.  My thinking was that this paper was heavy so it might need a little extra support.

Well, all I can say is that the Strong Grip Mat is exactly that – STRONG.  I couldn’t even get the paper back up.  When it did start coming up it was leaving a lot of it still on the mat.  But then I wasn’t using my spatula either.  You know Tracey – there are reasons that they make certain tools.

I wanted to go back to my regular stick mat (that wasn’t sticking very well) so I did some searching on good old You Tube and I found several ways to clean and restick my mats.  I used the quickest and easiest one and BAM – I had a brand new sticky mat.

All I did was use this:

*You can order the Stencil Ease Repositionable Stencil Adhesive Spray through Amazon or pick it up at Michaels or any other craft supply store.

I do recommend that you use painters tape or masking tape along the edges of the mat so that the sticky doesn’t get on the machine’s rollers.  I just might do a video of that someday soon.

Later, I went to the Cricut site to see what the Strong Grip Mat was for and this is what it told me:

Cricut® cutting mats have been customized to match commonly used crafting materials. Each has just the right level of grip to not only hold your material firmly in place during cutting, but to also allow you to easily remove the material from the adhesive surface. The StrongGrip mat offers a strong hold surface perfect for heavyweight materials such as specialty cardstock, glitter cardstock, chipboard, and fabric with stiffener. It’s our longest lasting mat featuring double life adhesive technology.

So my thought process was correct, I should have used the Strong Grip Mat for the “Glitter Cardstock” but I also needed to use my spatula to remove my images.

Speaking of the spatula – if you have a Cricut machine, I’m sure you have a spatula.  If you don’t this is what they look like AND you better get yourself one NOW!*

If you just pull your paper up without the spatula it can cause your paper to tear and curl.  Using the spatula properly will give you a much nicer finished product.

So what did I really learn today?
