Day 1 – What I Learned Today
Here it is, Day One of my “What I Learned Today Challenge”. I thought I would start the month off with 5 quick kitchen tips.
1. Take your bananas apart when you get home from the store. I knew to take the ripe bananas out of the bag but I didn’t know this tip. Seems that if they all stay connected at the stem they will ripen faster.
2. We use a lot of bell peppers at our house. I put them in just about every dish. I didn’t know that peppers with three bumps on the bottom are sweeter making them better for salads and that peppers with four bumps are firmer and better for cooking. Who knew the number of bumps made such a difference.
3. I also use a lot of garlic when I cook. It wasn’t until the last three or four years that I became a big garlic user. I’m not sure what happened to my taste buds but I’m glad it did. I’ve been experimenting with this little tip and it does make a difference. Adding garlic immediately to a recipe for a light taste and at the end of the recipe for a stronger taste of garlic.
4. We make lots of cupcakes when the grandsons visit. They LOVE to eat cupcakes and enjoy baking them too. When they are frosting the cupcakes, sometimes we run out of frosting before we run out of cupcakes. (I think more frosting ends up in their tummy than on the cupcake – ya’ know what I’m talking about) You can expand a can of store bought frosting by whipping it with your mixer for a few minutes. This makes the frosting fluffy and lets you frost a few more cupcakes out of that can.
5. I had forgotten about this sticky tip that my mother had taught me years and years ago. When measuring Crisco or other sticky ingredients like peanut butter, fill your measuring cup with hot water, pour out the hot water and then, without drying your cup, add the sticky substance and watch it slide right out.
Okay, I know I said five quick tips but I just had to add this one about those pesky fruit flies. We eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables during the season and sometimes those little pests try to take over the kitchen. Fill a small juice glass half way with Apple Cider Vinegar and a couple of drops of dish detergent . Don’t know why, but they love the mixture and they are drawn to the cup. AND Jeannine swears that Vinegar can fix, cure or kill anything.
